LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.
Wellington. Yesterday. Mr Wjhitaker moved the second reading of the iNative Land Laws Acfc Amendment Bill, explaining its provisions, and the desirability of removing the undoubted abuses of the present system. He asserted that the bill should not be retrospective in its operation, and that those who, had sheep running on native land could, under the bill, continue to allow them so to run.—Mr P. A. Buckley moved the throwing out of the bill, stating that its operation would greatly retard the progress of the North Island. Ho was told that a Minister, of the Crown had asserted that he would allow a week for the clearing of sheep off native land after thebill was passed, and the result would be that many thousands would have to be destroyed.—Sir G. Whitmore followed and spoke to the same effect.—Mr J. G. Richmond supported the bill subject tp amendments that he thought ought to be made in it
The Council adjourned.
