The North Deutsche JSietung in a leading article to-day referring to recent attacks on Germany, in the French Press, warmly denounces France as the sole dis« turber of the peace of Europe.

London, August 22.

A doctor named Connelly and- his brother were arrested to-day by the police in Limerick on a tjharge of conspiracy to murder. Pabis, August 22. Intelligence has been received from Tonquin that the French troops have attacked and captured the town of Haiphong, and aa Anamite force which was defending the place fled.

London, August 22.

In the House of Commons last night the Premier was again questioned regarding the action of the French commander in Madagascar in detaining the British Consular and naval officers at Tamatave. In the course of his reply, Mr Gladstone repeated his assurance that there was every prospect of an amicable settlement of the difficulty being arrived at, and that nothing had as yet occurred in Madagascar to disturb the friendly relations between England and France.

Madbid, August 21.

The Spanish Government haa demanded the expulsion from France of the guerilla troops who fled across the frontier after the recent futile attempt to raise a rebellion. The French Government has, however, put difficulties in the way of the extradition of the rebels, and diplomatic relations between the two countries are in consequence somewhat strained at the present time.

London, August 21. The Comte da Chambord is in a state of coma, and it is apparent that his end is fast approaching. The Hon. Evelyn Ashley, Under-Secre-tary for the Colonies, has intimated that the action of Queensland in ordering armed vessels has been approved by the Imperial Government. Earl Spencer, Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland, has visited Cork*, where he received a. most respectful reception. Mr Shaw, the British missionary at Tamatave, is accused by the French authorities with complicity with the Hovas.
