A Parnellite. named Lynch \has been elected to the House of Commons for the County of Sligo, in the room of the late Denis O'Connor, a Tory candidate. The candidate who opposed Lynch was defeated by a large majority..
. The French Government has informed Earl Granville, Foreign Secretary, that Mr Shaw, the British Missionary at Tamatave, is now on board the French ironclad, and that he will be, dealt with according to martial laws, but will be allowed a right of appeal.
A disturbance took place to-day at County Down, Ireland, at au eviction of tenants. A body of policemen which was escorting a process server, were attacked by sympathisers of the tenant, and in a fight which ensued, two policemen were shot and seriously wounded.
Alexandria, August 20.
The latest reports from Cairo state that the cholera has now entirely ceased in that city; the epidemic is decreasing here and in the provinces, and it is hoped that a further spread of the plague has been stayed.

Many influential colonists were present at the ceremony of launching the large "Victorian gunboat. Amongst those were Colonel Scratchley, Sir John Hall, Messrs Disney, Thomas, Tupper (of Canada), &c. The christening, was performed by Mrs Chiiders. Mr Murray Srrfith, AgentGeneral for Victoria, in his speech, said the colonies were determined to defend their own shores, but while they were devotedly loyii to'the Empire, the Imperial Government must be prepared to recognise their wants, and even to listen to occasional demands for annexation. The Eight Hon. Mr Chiiders, in his speech, attributed his success in politics in England in a large measure to his colonial training, and professed himself greatly attached to "Victoria. He said it was the duty of England to maintain the colonial connection, and the Government had no desire to shirk their duty towards the colonies because the policy demanded might sometimes be rather inconvenient.
The holders of Australian hops anticipate being able to command the market; several parcels of carelessly packed Tasmanian hops have, however, injured the sales. Victorian and Tasmanian parcels are weak.
The Chimborazo's cargo of meat has arrived in splendid condition.
The Sultan favours the Palestine Canal project. The Italian fleet has been recalled from Morocco, the Sultan of that country redressing the grievances complained of.
The Australian Wine Company have been awarded a silver medal at the Amsterdam Exhibition.
The Australian freight ring is exciting attention in commercial circles.
