Parliamentary Gossip.

(FBOM OTJEOWif COBEESPONDENT.)

Wellington, This day. Yesterday Capt. Morris presented a petition from Robert Graham, of Ohinemutu. It sets forth that in 1878 the petitioner entered into relations with the chiefs of Rotorua for the permanent occupation of a block of land named Te Koutou, and that the Thermal Springs Act put it out of the petitioner's power to acquire the legal title thereto, and that the passing of the Native Land Law Amendment Act, 1883,! would inflict a great and undeserved injury and loss npon the petitioner; he accordingly prays for relief and pro 1 tection. The Public Petitions Committee reports, re the petition of Young, Pope, and Co., which sets forth that the petitioners were in partnership as mail contractors, and entered into a contract with the Government to carry mails by coach between Tauranga and the Thames ; that at the time the contract was entered into the roads were in good repair ; that in the month of February last the roads became destroyed by floods, thereby stopping i coach traffic; that they then carried the mails on horse-back, by which they suffered great loss through not being able to carry passengers; that the roads not being constructed they were compelled to sell their plant at a great loss; and they pray for compensation. The Committee find that having carefully inquired into the claims, it does not consider that the petitioners have any claim for compensation against the colony.
