The Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR P.M. Resurrexi. TUESDAY, AUGUST 14, 1883.
Fbom our Fijian files we see that it is not at all an agreeable proposal to the inhabitants of the Isles that they should be annexed to New Zealand. They are quite prepared to go in for a little federation, but they think that something better than being attached to this colony, awaits them. Doubtless our Island friends are right, and ..before they commit themselves to be tied to our, or any other apron* strings, they should await the development of the movement which is gradually setting in towards Australasian Federation. The. interests of the various « British colonies south of the line are in no way antagonistic; there may be small differences injiheir systems' of managing internal affairV;/bnt there can be no question ' that their prosperity would be materially advanced were they working together under one head in* stead of following up the "pull devil, pull , baker " policy which some of them are—to their detriment —now indulging in. The union by rail of the Australian colonies renders their, interests more identical than those of, the Australias and our colony can ever be, but the advantages of colonial federation, and the strength to be gained by such *, a union, cannot be over estimated. We would reap immense and incalulable benefits by being joined to such a federation, which without a doubt, meansinthe future the buildiDg up of a powerful southern nation. We regret that th» important colony oC Fiji should dis dam to have her vast'interests amalgamated with our measurable prospects, ! but still we must admit that, the significant place which that prominent power must take in the race of nations, perhaps, justifies it declining an alliance with a weaker colony. We should hare felt
! proud, of the association, but, as it is not |Ho'J»«/we must meekly bow our heads, I ud Submit to the ineritoble.
