Parliamentary Gossip.

(fkom oub own cobbespondent.)

WEiiiiiNaTON, This day.

Mr Sheehan^ M.H.R., and Mr Eobert Graham, who arrived <on, Sunday, have arranged a conference with "the Premier for this afternoon to receive the long* expected reply re the Thames Valley Railway. An arrangement will, it is expected, be forthcoming. The delay ie attributed to some extra work thrown on the attention of the Premier conseouent

upon the Atkinson-Dargaville fracas. The latter transaction has been assuming a variety ofphases. Yesterday afternoon an overture came from the Government to square the affair, the condition was that Mr Dargaville should retract the allegation alleged to have been made by him, in accordance with a formula in which he should express regret and a withdrawal of the statement made. This the latter refused to do, expressing a determination to abide t by the statement he had already made, viz, that he had not intended imputing personal corruption, either to Major Atkinson or the Premier. The efforts to arrive at an adjustment is known to have been kept up till a late hour to-day. The Committee of Inquiry has held its first sitting. Mr Sheehan watches the proceedings, and conducts negotiations, on behalf of Mr Dargaville. It is more than I probable that a further attempt will be made to bring this affair to an adjustment.
