LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.

Wellington, Yesterday.

In the Council to-day the Taiaro Land Bill was read a second time.—Mr Pharazyn moved a resolution that the honorarium should cease at the end of the present Parliament, and if the Council were made elective it should not exceed £1 per diem for three months only, Wellington members not to get anything. Messrs Whit" more, Grace, Robinson, Scotland, Brett* Acland, and Reynolds opposed the motion, and Mr Nnrse supported it. Mr Richmond moved an amendment deprecating discussion on the honorarium until the proposals of the Government about the Constitution of the Council were before it. Mr Pharazyn's motion was negatived by 24 to 4, and Mr Richmond's

amendment was negatived on the voices.— Mr Menzies moved the sesond reading of the Election of School Committees Bill. Messrs Oliver, Whitmore, Pollen, and Baillie opposed it;— The debate was adjourned, and the Council rose at 5.
