At a meeting of the Bay 1 of Islands Coal Company, held to-day, the accounts rendered showed a loss for the half year's working; no dividend was declared.
At tbe inquest held into the death of Maria Scott yesterday, Dt Haines said the cause of death was internal hemorrhage, from rupture of the aneurism. The fright she had received from the attack of the monkey, and the fire at the [Union Company would accelerate the rupture. The jury returned a verdict of " death from natural causes."
The City Council last night resolved to bring the Contagious Diseases Act into operation ; the cost of the hospital not to exceed £600 a year.
, William Barns and Thoma3 Baldie, seamen on the steamer Tarawera, arrested yesterday for smuggling tobacco ashore, were brought up at the Police Court today, and each fined £25 and costs.
The charges against Messrs Hennessy, Casey, and O'Donoghue, for evicting Mrs! Walsh, were brought on at the Police Ccurt to-day, and they were further remanded till Monday next.
