Thi proceedings of some larrikins in Pollen street last night are likely to be made the aubject of a magisterial enquiry. The s.s. Ik* Boon* Venture left Shortland 'Wharf on' Saturday at five o'clock for the barque Loch Ken, hating on board Mr B. F. Tizard, Collector of Customs, who presided at the enquiry held, Captain Bayldon, .Harbormaster, who was appointed nautical assessor for the. occasion, and the representatives of the local press. The vessel .was reached shortly after six o'clock, an«l Mr Tixard explained, the object of hie visit to the captain, who at once placed a large room in the after* partof the ship at his disposal. About 10 o'ciooktlie party retarned to the little ateamer, after bidding the skipper of the barque good* jbyeasd wubing him a pleasant and speedy voyage, and were soon on the way home. The bracts being fair Captain Wilson hoisted his sale, and before morning was out of tight. The master of the cutter Sovereign of the Seas sighted her at about 'midnight, tinder 1 full sail, off Coromaridel, and heading down I the harbour towards Cape Colville. rXhe Loch Ken has on board 800 tons weight of cargo, and is not down to her water Jine. by about four feet, her draught at present being 15ft 6in. Eev. Pxthbb O'Gaba, 0.5.8., Auckland, was the celebrant at St. Francis' Church yet- j terday, and taking as hia text the virtue of humility, he gave a very fluent—indeed elo- ' quent—and at the same time eminently practical discourse. Adverting to the beauti* ful attribute of speech with which the Creator endowed mankind, he forcibly pointed out the mischievous manner in which this divine gift ia frequently abused, and gare some salutary admonitions to his bearers on the necessity of guarding and restraining that unruly member —the tongue. . He also preached at vespers a. very fervid and impressive sermon on repent* ance. We learn it is intended by the pro* rooters of the impending bazaar, in aid of the Catholio'Schools, to request the rev. gcntlo* man, who has the reputation of being a very capable scientist, especially in the domain of astronomy—to consent to deliver a lecture at some early date in favor of the bazaar funds. Eowe captained the wioning side whilst J., Farqnhar led the Kauaeranga Boys. A return match will probably come off in about a fortnight's time. Thb enquiry held on Saturday evening, on board the Loch Ken, into the circumstances attending her stranding in the harbor on Thursday night, lasted four hours. When it had been going on about two hours a nice breeze sprang up from the southward, and Captain Wilson, knowing that^ it was a splendid chance for him to get dear qs#' joto the op'en ocean, as t|me wore on began to get anxious, aa to when the enguiry'wouH end. Several times be asked Captain Bayldon, Hftrbprmaster, to atep on deck and tee
whether the wind whs likeiy to ontitiUi-. These actions provoked a remark from Mr Tizard to the effect that it was not a matter of pleasure to him, but of duty, and he would Ittuoh, rather^ at bom*. Captain Wilson 'immediately replied, " You must not thiok me inhospitable, but I too certainly wish you were'tl>ere." . Thb sis.
