Parliamentary Gossip.
FHOM OtJB OWK COBBESPONDENT.) Wellington, This day. The stonewallers are by no means elated at their performance on Saturday morning: nor can the Government be complimented on what is called their firmness. The whole thing was indecent in the highest degree. Many members desired to speak on several matters—that on the vote, £83,000, for Charitable Aid for instance—-but no opportunity was given them to do so. Messrs Fish and Seddon lacked discretion. The only consolation is that the scene tended to decrease (be amount of respect felt, for the Lower House, t heard the scene described as one affording much fun. But members are not sent there to act the part of buffoons; nor are Ministers appointed, for bear-leading purposes. One effect' the scene will.have is to shorten the, session, as j* anxious to get away, all feeling that no* good can be done—Ministers keeping their seats, which is all they care about. - The question of finance hat now resolved itself into one between the civil service and the taxpayers. The service will increase and multiply as long as the taxpayer will bleed. I hear that, Miller, of the Council is also a candidate for the Agent-Generals! ship./' V-i I:) ;•'•*'' >*"'■ '' ;■ \ i It is said that Bryce make 3 a native ■tatement to-morrow night. >. v ... ;• i
A memorandum from the Wellington auctioneers' has been sent to members concerning the Auctioneers' Bill' now before Parliament. They object to many of its provisions.
Since writing the above I am told that Hall applies also for the Agent-General» ship; and that Atkinaon sat throughout Saturday morning" alone, to" get the Charitable Aid vote through. ■
