MINING SUMMARY.

Business during the month has been somewhat brisk, the shares • affected chiefly being Queen of Beauty, Deep Level Cross, and Bright Smile.,. Queens 'hare been sold as high as 255. owing to ;the improved prospects met with at No. 9 (level, but have since receded to about 14s; {Bright Smiles rose from Is 6d to 3s 6d, and are now standing at 3s: i Crosses hare risen in the last day or two from 3s lOd to 4s lid, but are again a little easier. Other stock show very little change. The yield of gold for the month is large, but it is noticable that the greater portion of it comes from three mines. The field on the whole shows a decided improvement since last mail, and though at present only three companies, the Imperial, Waiotahi, and Bright Smile, are paying dividends, the. Queen of Beauty, Caledonian, and Goldeu Crown promise' to once more become regular gold producers. * A large number of companies are opening up their ground, and several. should, be .- producing payable crushing dirt in a few months. Queen of Beauty: Since last summary the continuation of the main reef northwards' beyond the slide has been picked up at Wo; 9 level, and driven on 40, feet. . The reef in the drive averaged about 18 inches for the first 30 feet, and produced 5801bs of picked stone abd specimens". The run of gold is evidently dipping eastward, and good gold was left showing in the floor. Stopine: has nowbeen started, and gold is seen freely in the quartz. The reef in the drive for several feet was pinched up, but it is now opening out again, and showing dabs of gold. At Noi- 10 level the northward drive on the reef is in 46ft from the big slide. A clay head crossed ? the drive last Week, haring the reef about 2 feet, and beyond this the quartz is 2|ft wide, carrying splendid minerals, but showing no gold yet. ' The' drive south is now in'los feet from the shaft, and (he reef is 2% feet wide and loQking_well._X!abß of gold were seen in it a few 1 days ago, whore a slide crossed the face. Stoping will be started over this drive shortly. From the last- month's operations, the returns.have been as follows: Moantairi battery crushed 93 loads for 96*'Zs retorted gold j company's battery crushed 407 loads* and 582!bs of picked stone.for 7290zs retorted gold, making a total from 1 both rb*£t'erins' of 500 loads craslufl, 'which yielded 80oozs ISFdwfl melted gold.L^Ebe amount lodged in bank fism gold, peYcentam and tailings was £2373 17s 2d to the oVedit of the company. 30 head of. stamps are still* coar stantly employed. New Prince Imperial: The yield for June was 2G33ozs Jiiwtni gold from 570 loads general dirt and 11; cwt specimens and picked stone. 'The mine cjm tinuja, to look well all through, and.already 5£ cwt of" specimens aiM picked si one have come to hand ;• $? head of-stampers are employed on ,4he general dirt;'which is shaping well. iAt No. 5 level the No. 2 reef has been .driven on and' opened v*ap ready for stoping to the western b'ouadary, and a block 203 feetju length is in hand here. The " reef spliLsome 30 feet from the boundary, sp-there is also a block that length wrlhe hanging wall brancjb tostope on^i Eastward a block 10Q feet in length fs being worked. These blocks yield rich hauls of stone from each s tope carried along, •nd a» there is yet 70 feet of backs to work to No. 4 level, there is every reason to suppose, that good returns will be obtained for many months to come. At No. 4 level the JSo. 1 reef has been drivpn on 200 ft, being in places 10ft. wide, and averaging over 3ft., all of which, with baoks 150 ft. in .height, will proba«, •*ry^oTo^j*yabUL Arrive is also being pushed on eastward, to meetawlnzoiwhipf sunk from No. 3 level, and the quality of the dirt, if anything, ioproves as the drive advances. There is yet some 400 feet to drive before the boundary will be reached, so it will 'be seen that the company has work in prospect for several years. The crosscut being driven through a corner of this company* ground at the 640 ft. level by the Deep LeveJ Cr,oss, will be very useful, as from it thji company -an easily prospect "their ground at that deffth. A 5s dividend has been declared, making 21s per share paid since work was started- Deep , Level Cross : The south crosscut at the 640 feet lerel is being' pushed steadily ahead in good country for gold. A leader about eight incbes wide was cut yesterday morning in the Imperial Company's,ground. No gjld was 'seen, though the quartz looks wtj)|. It is dippitg to the, northward.' Whether this is the No.* 2 reef or not • cannot yet be said, as according to^urrey that body should be .50, or 60ft Turther ahead. A w itiZe will, however, be started afc No. 5 level of the Imperial shaft in a few days, and when this is down it will settle the matter. The - hangingwall brauch of No. 2 reef at No.' ' 5 level has been driven on to its junction with the } erossreef, aod^ the Utter-lode is being ' opened otit'upon. This lode, identical with the' Mariner's in the Imperial,'is a steady gold producer, and as the company has a large block to stoge.but on it, over 100 ft in height, there is- plenty of work ahead. Drifing has just Seen commenced on the footwall leader, and 401bs of specimens havr Wen obtained; while gold, is seeu^fitily through r r tbe qunrtz. Last month's return waa an average of,, an. ounoe Per load, but the general dirt if now shaping better, so the return this mouth will be larger.

Mariner: At No. 5.. level the No. 2 reef baal been driven on westward over 80ft. It averages about 9 inches in width, and colors of gold hare been seen each break' ing down, but no specimens hare been obtained. A leading stope has also been carried along this drive, the reef in it looking about the same. A trial crushing gave ISdwts per "load. Eastward of the Abaft the No. 2 reef is pinched up by bad country at present. The hangingwall leader is being; worked in this direction ; it is small, but gold is seen every breaking. A.crosscut to intersect No. 3 reef, which yielded well in places oii the upper levels is in progress,, and the lode shduld be to hand in about a week. London : A trial crushing from No. 1 reef at No. 3 level gave the encouraging result of 19dwts per load, but a second trial from the same reef a short distance further east ward did not shape payably, so the manager is sinking a winze under the tributers' old stopes on the run of gold, which yielded 3or 4ozs to Hie load. The ground is all solid under foot. The first breaking produced 15lbs of good picked stone. Good colors and' dabs are also seen in No. 2 reef, same level. Queen of England: The drive easttm No. 1 reef at No. 3 level has been stopped, and the men are now extending the ' western drive— a trial lot treated from here giving a return that was nearly - payable. Both reef and country have since shown an improvement, and'the^manager is in hopes of opening up a payable block in this I direction, as on the levels above remunera tive quartz was found near the big slide, which is about, 100 feet ahead. The directors have all but two men on account of the lowness of funds, so progress is necessarily very slow. Thames .Golden Crown: This mine is beginning to look better, and before long should again come to the front as a steady gold producer. A large block of stopea is being opened up on Herival's leader, a trial having given the payable yield of one ounce per ton. .Dagg's leader at an intermediate level is worth lOdwts, which is also payable, and in the drive west on No. 1 battery-level reef nt the 170 feet level 5 feet wide of Crushing .dirt is being taken oat. The block on this reef is over 100 ft. long, with about 80 feet^pf backs. A small lead in hand on this level is yielding payable dirt. Caledonian: One hundred loads of dirt from tha stopes on the Bed Queen cross-leader above No. 1 level, gave the remunerative yield of 171ozs. gold, and regular monthly cruahings will in future take place. The ■ reef continues to look about the same, gold being seen each breaking, and a few picked stone coming to band. A winze is being sunk to No. 2 level, and the reef is lookiugjjwell going down. If it continues pa'fable <70ft.» of backs can be opened up without a great deal of expense/ < New Manukau: Communication has been affected between the Caledonian 360 ft. level and the winze sunk from the W^iwiahi bottom level. The manager has, opened out on both Nos. 5 and 6 reefs, and trial parcels will be treated shortly: The former 1* of a good size, but shows no gold; the latter averagesi a foot ml width; aoc^ icolprs. were /seen- prettj^freelyltiiif breaking. Waiotahi: The month's yield was very satisfactory, 200 tons yielding 3660z5. gold, and the, mine continues to look well throughout. ■' Moanatairi: This company's quartz is principally coming, to hand from No. *9 |reef above the tunnel leveland theNoiif re^f ariiiCß®f^e^l. Other small leaders are also in hand, and the crushing yielded payably. Kuranui Hill: The quartz from above the 80ft. level did not yield so well as expected, but work is still being pushed on in. this section. Driving has also been started on the Moanatairi No. 9, reef at the tunnel level. It is about ,2ft. wide, and well jtniueiraliHecl/ Hunt's reef, the famous Shoto'ver lode, has been cut in the south crosscut from the prospecting shaft sunk in the battery v^ard. Where first passed through it was broken up,' but was payable, one load yielding Bdwts gold. The manager has.now started to open s ofc^t upon it northwards, and it,,has shqwi^a great im .provement.. The drive is in ttbout* 15ft.| and the lode is 2ft wide, carrying exejk lent mineral, and showing colors of gotd£' The quartz is rubbly -mid easily bn.ktsn ..out. he discovery of nay able qu-trtz 'h^re in encouraging as there is a stretch of unworked ground flJßoft» in length to prospect. Winding* machinery^oould be plac d at the shaft with very little ex* pense, and the dirt run straight into the battery. The northern crosscut is,in good country, and Barry's reef will probably be to hand in a day or two. Moanataiejk Creek: The Alburnia and New North Devon are both working on Dixou's reef; the former is driving and the latter stoping, but the quartz is not payable.— Waiotahi Creek. The B-ight Smile is the I principal miue at work here, and siuce last summary it has been looking very well all through. Drives are being put in east and west on the leader, which averages about eight inches wide, and gold is seen freely. The stopes in band are also yielding good crushing dirt, and those over the eastern drive, have 3 pjcojdiig<|d >3251b8 of specimens. Crushing *wiU hot lare^rpliwo^ tiiWlthS _jroa| has been repaired, but the dirt on hand will yield well when treated. , The New Columbia and Pinafore companies are also working, and the Hibernia will start sinking a shaft shortly, from which they intend prospecting the - Waiotahi Company's reefs. Kara k a Creek : The rieymcur shaft is down 180 ft, and a chamber is now . beiug cut •dt' preparatory to driving on the reef. The City' of Manchester and. Adelaide' claims ' are working on a reef, and the - former has produced some good stone lately. The Hooky Point is driving for the same reef at a lower level. Hape Creek : The Dart Company's machinery is now nearly com-' pleted, and the manager expects to be able to start pumping next week. The Magnolia and Hobson companies, wKose properties are situated between the t.w>> last mentioned creeks, are, i uking out trial, parcels, and if the ; , prove payable good blooks of ground can be opened up. Otunui: 'Several claims in this district nre still pushing on work, and some rich specimens have come to hand from* the Oriental Amalgamated. The Eureka company's 12 head battery is now .finished, and the road from it to the mines wil] be completed in about a fortnight, when tenders will probably be called for the conveyance of quartz. In the Upper Country a large amount of work is going on, Earangabake: Excellent; prospects are being met with, and a great deal of genuine prospecting is being done. Waitekauri: Hollis and party have discovered good gold at the lowest level yet known in the district, and a find likely to prove ot som*importance has also been m><dc by Mesgjrs Huntley and iSkene, in the Waitekauri United claim. Waihi: The Martha Extended claim is at work on payable, though lew grade, dirt.

Owbaroa; The Smile of Fortune Company are —taking out —remunerative dirt. Te Aroha: A considerable number of claims are at work, and good crushing dirt is coming to hand. The construction of tke tramway from the mines to the jbattery is also being pushed on. A jsecofld |iton of quartz, has been jtreated ffrdm tie Welcome ' for bfei&Sofcs 'gold, making the rich yield of lldozs | from two tons of general dirt.
