The Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR P.M. Resurrexi. FRIDAY, JULY 13, 1883.

Thb Thames Valley Bailway Company has been for a long time struggling to obtain from the Government what they hare every right to expect in the way of assistance to carry out the construction of their line, but their exertions, we regret to say, have up to the present time, not had any practical result. It would not be going top far to say thnt instead of beiuf» encouraged in the prosecution of 'such An important public work as they propose, every difficulty bag been thrown in their way by the Government. In such undertakings, which are for -the public benefit, it is the duty of the administration to further, in every.possible way, the efforts of projectors—people who undertake works which should be carried out by the Government—but" instead of this, we find not only no desire evinced by tho|e in power to help us in the matter, but when we indicate a manner in which assistance could be given, and that without any great amount of trouble or inconvenience, we are met with refusals and rebuffs. It is next to useless to point out the neglect of the district at the hands of the Government; this has been done so often, that it would amount to dreary reiteration to repeat it; but, we would urge the Directors of the com pany to -'ttike heart of grace" after seeing the success, met with .by the Thames Valley and Botorua Bailway company. Delegates visited Wellington , in connection with the line we speak of,

and apparently came back empty handed, but pressure afterwards applied in the right direction secured them certain ralaabie concessions, and, we hare no doubt if the same method of pushing our claims were adopted, a beneficial result would ensue. To point out the advantages from the construction, and the urgency of the line, would be merely recapitulating what has frequently been published., before; the public do not require to be again shewn those things, and the Government are quite aware of them. We are very much inclined to the opinion that if a oompetent delegate were seat to Wellington daring ..the •ession, much good would result; the members for the various districts benefitted by the line could, and would, if " kept to it" by a repre sentative of the company, obtain some of those rights which are required. Pressure brought to bear in such a manner would doubtless have some beneficial result. We would advise the Directors to select one of their number to pro* coed to Wellington without delay, urge the claims of the. company upon the Government, and use efforts, iv combi* nation with members for the districts concerned, to hare the company's rights 1 recognised. It would be useless to send a delegate who is not acquainted with the " ways that are dark " in legislative circles, and on account of his past experience in similar errands, we would suggest to the Board to despatch the County Chairman, who is one of themselves, to look after their interests during the session. If anything is to be done in the matter, it should be done instantly,. as the longer the concern is allowed to languish, .the weaker it will become.
