Mace and the Maori pugilist (Slade) v were in London the other day, and are now touring in the North of England. The English sporting papers seem to be loud in the praises of Slade's appearance, which, Figaro says, is suggestive of even greater strength and a longer reach than the famous Heenan possessed. Great efforts; are being made to Hrrange fora display of bis talents, and there are even rumours of a surreptitious revival of the glories of the P.R. for the purpose. Mace, curiously enongh, does not please his old friends. They say he has grown a great " braggart," and has quite lost his " form" '
Mr Henry Bramall, M.1.C.E., read a paper before the Liverpool Geological Society recently, on the " Mineral Resources of New Zealand." He described the goldflelds at length, and gave full particulars of the methods of working, mode of tenure, &c. The lecture is said to have been most interesting. - ■ The death is announced of Captain George Mariner, Magistrate and Inspector of Police in British Honduras, who was thrown from his horse into a river and drowned on 27th March. He served with the 58th Regiment in New Zealand and will be remembered well by^ld identities.
