WELLINGTON.

.:■» This day. • The steamer Botorua, from Nelson and Picton, was going through the French

Pass at 11.45/Inst night, and whilst in the eddy the ship's head canted towards the bluff, and in consequence of the steering gear not acting promptly she grazed sharply on the point opposite the beacon. Capt. Anderson at once called all bands ob deck, and bad the boats cleared away; the wells were sounded and no water was found. Meantime she had been beaded into Klmslie'g Bay; it being intended to beach her if necessary, and she was kept in that position for half an hour; at the end of that time, as no water was Reported in the well, the vessel left for Pic ton, and went thence to Wellington. As the patent slip is engaged, the steamer will go on to Lytteltoo. An enquiry will probably be held at the Resident Magistrate's Court to day. Henry Alexander, tobacconist, was summoned for Sunday trading. The facts were admitted, but the defendant's counsel contended that the Imperial Act of Charles 11, under which the information was laid, did not apply to the colonies. The Magistrate took an opposite view, aad fined the defendant £5 and costs. Notice of appeal was given.
