OUR MINES.
QUEEN OF BEAUTY.
The manager has started to rise above No. 9 level, so as to be able to open out and start stoping the new reef. ■ The rise was commenced in the sandstone where the reef was heaved, and the quartz is showing on both sides. A •mall portion of the reef was broken down this morning, and 50 pounds of pioked atone and specimens were bagged, leaving a good show on the eastward aide of the rise. Some of the stone were very rich ; the best pieces were obtained in breaking down on the eastern side, but where the reef is showing iv the western..end some good picked stone was takenout.gold aisd being seen freely through the general dirt. At N# 10 level, in the 'seaward drive, the men are engaged timbering up, and will not break quartz for a day or two. A further breaking in the rise this afternoon yielded 501 bs picked stone, leaving gold still showing. In the stopes. north of the winae above No, 10 level the reef is lOftA wide and looking well. A body of quartz seems to be striking off from the main reef here, and the manager has started to open out upon it. # ifEW PRINCE IMPERIAL.,
The drive west at No. 5 level, on the footwall branch of No. 2 reef, will be up to the boundary to-morrow, when the Deep Level Cross men will commence work in it. Eastward, of the crosscut at this level, the drive is at a standstill, but the atopes are in hand, and the reef in them is looking well. At No. 4 level the face of the drive on the footwall portion of No. 1 reef is now withiu about 45 feet of the point where the winze will come down. The reef is improving as the drive advances, which Itttgnrtf well for the productiveness of the block bejng opened up. In the winze the reef carries
a clean foottrall, so no quartz is being broken. The contractors have now 80ft to sink. The manager reported yesterday as follows:—" I am very happy to inform yon that the result of our past month's crushing has produced 20540zs retorted gold from 570 loads of quartz and llcwt specimens. The drive on the footwall branch of No. 2 lead, No. 2 section west, No. 5 level, is now within 3ft of the boundary. The lead is keeping about the same.size, and still continues to show gold freely, some good picked stone having been obtained therefrom daring the past week. Stoping is being carried on in the two western section* as usual, and the lead continues to look much about the same. The lead in the stopes in No. 1 section east is looking much better, and has produced some good specimens and picked stone during the past few dajjs. Driving on No. 1 reef, No. 4 level, is still being pushed ahead with all possible speed, and I have much pleasure in stating that the reef is improving in quality as the drive proceeds, tjold being now more frequently seen in breaking down. Stoping i 8 being carried on as usual on this.reef, but there is no change to mention since my last. Contractors in winze at No. 3 level are now down 70 feet, and the country still continues splendid for gold. Crushing is still going on with 12 head at the Alburnia and 15 head at the Golden Crown.—G. S. Clark."
CALEDONIAN
The winze being sunk from No. 1 level on the Eed Queen crossleader is now down 10 feet, and is stopped while the men rig up a windlass. The leader looks well, and showed strooK colors of gold freely at last breakins down, and the country is also good. The distance to sink to Ho. 2 level ' is 60 feet vertical, and a crosscut will be put in at that level from the old workings, ... and the leader opened out upon without delay, as once the winze is connected with, good ventilation will be secured.
