BIBLE BEADING IN SCHOOLS.
(To the Editor of the Btening SUr.j Sib, —Those, who now; mourn over tie absence of Bible reading in schools or else* where, will yet smile again. Mr DeLau* tour's deep reverence for true religion and virtue expresses the opinion of many millions, as to the exclusion of inch subjects' from educational systems in our present state of ignorance. . The great secret* contained in Genesis and other part* of the sacred records will; however, yet be revealed, and science thereby become reeon-' . ciled to Revelation. The (school-books ef the present day conflict with Scripture. The sciences of geology, ethnology, anthroj / pology, chronology, and history • are .all seemingly irreconcilable, with the Bible.as now understood, but scientists dol not therefore hasten to conclude that the Scrip* tures are not defensible, because the present knowledge or understanding of them doea not fall in with the existing amount olacienlificlearning. A distinction it made betweeji^ what is oow kuown and What there is yet| to learn. The Bible need not decline the ' test of true aud mature science,, but partial acquirements, are not fit to judge it. , There, are secrets . connected with
holy .thing's. Time will throw light upon them. - Historical research may, as the learned Maimonedes hinted, revetl~>thst& Genesis is an allegory, relating; to th#': mystery of physios generally, a* certain* ■ other parts of the Beriptures are typioal of of the human mind. Are we sure that iv oar erring and 5 perplexed condition we ' have got the key to the right understanding of the words, vocables, , -pJjifMea, metaphors, parables, allegoriea, a*d-ill those- things in sacred scripture which when taken in their : literal aenae, appear to teach something foreign to i the purpose, are hetrodox paradoxical; absurd, or to have little or no use ? Iti»> ' \ recorded of the founder of '' 1 that. ' He spake, nothing without a parable.* Is this key always used in unlocking the mysteries of the Christian religion P May there not b»* plain historical truth and a. complete revelation of Deity* in tbe relation of the Bua to the planets and stars, in phyaies, and the/ euV tivatioa, of tbe human * mind ;in morals? Tbe grand secret of moil religions seems to be tbe typificatioo of the Iglajr relation and planetary motioli with mental and moral cultivation.' When the esoterical principles of. iTjdaism and Christianity are understood, amd science becomes the basis of* human culture and > discipline, the Bible will "be again read in schools, a,nd that which is now a mystery of mysteries explained philosophically.— I am, &9., , '' ' '' ■*' ' , ;'.":, S ; Obseetjsb.
