The Morning Post, writing on the sub J ject of Pacific annexation, expresses an opinion that a British protectorate over the islands will suffice for the^presenfc. The wool sales closed firmly on Friday. The number, of bales catalogued was 340,000^ about half of which was for export, including 4000 on American account; 22,000 bales were carried over to next sales. Prices generally were . steady throughout, and on a level with the March closing rates ; good and superior combing qualities (greasy) commanding a penny j advance, and scoured merinos and the finer cross-breeds remaning unchanged. Coarse I cross-breeds have averaged a penny-lower. As the demand for consumption continues good, and stocks are light, the present rate will probably be maintained at the next series. June 22. The artillery trials made at Shoeburyness show that no advantage would result in the case of such guns as there^are in the colonies adopting the Pal User packe ted shot. :■'■■■-' The Hon.
