QUEEN QF BEAUTY.
The manager telegraphed this morning : "la squaring up drive No. 9- obtained SOlbs of picked stone.—C. H. Wilson.*;' This make" 1501bs froji a spues equal to about the size of a drive, end the reef, showed gold frc-ely from top to bottom of the portion broken. 29ib3 of tbe; stone were bagged last night, and the other 30lbj this morning, a capital show being left in the roof of the drive. Tbe third sfcope northward above No. 10 level was started this morning, aad in breaking down tie reef a strong dab of sold was found. The . manager reported yesterday :— " Since my last report of tbe 11th inst. the contractors of .No. 10 level southward have driven a further distance' of 25''t which has completed their contract of 50ft, and I have re-let them another 50.t at 20s per foot, being 5s 6d par foot le<n thin tueir last contract. The reef has | greatly improved ii s?ze and appearance,; it is now 2ft in thickaess. with good mineral indicifciors. The maiu a.ive going norch-e. stward on tbe Queen of itaj resf is in row 40;t pest the winze, looking well for cariyhs gold. The drive 30'ng nosth is in 12ft, bat I have not' r broken down any of the reef sine my last report. The leading stope going seaward is ia a distance of 80ft, the second slope 30ft. The le£d: nsf stope going northward is in 35ft, and second 20ft, measurejnents being tr.ken ,rom the winze. The reef throughout the slopes averages about 4ft in thickness. No. 9 level: We starCed to drive on Monday at the junction of the Queen of May reef, and an. old drive, and in opening out about 2ft w« cut a lcie 18 inches in thickne3S, from whioh we obtained 401 bs of picked stone, and left a good dhow in. the face. I believe this will prove to 4>e the main reef, for it is bearing the same course land underlay, and by all that I learn is iottact to £o. 5 level. I am keeping the full force going at oar battery, and started 10 head more at the Moanntairi battery[since writing this 801b» more of picked ■tone have oome to hand from the same place.]—C. H. Wilson." -.; NEW 4BINCE IMPERIAL. The following telegram was posted this morning :—" Eetorts on fire with 3214 >gs amalgam.— G. 8. Cla.sk." This comprises the amalgam from the general dirt treated up to Saturday as well as that from the specimens, and is very nearly as much as the total yield .^f amalgam last month. The retorting produoed the splendid result of 12230zs gold, whioh was reduced on melting to 1209bzs 15d »tB. The 220 loads treated at the Golden Crown battery gave 412 ozs gold, aod the 9cwt specimens put through at the Alburuia 810ozs, a* average of 16dwts per Ib. At No. 5 level westward the men are engaged shooting down the foot wall portion of the reef preparatory to timbering up the drive. The quartz looks well. Lv the second stope the reef i« much more jompact than in the level. The -third itopd ii now ju«t through tbe. break. ■ In >reaking down-the reef in tkuctopelast reek some good stone «v obtained, and iven the rubbly quartz in the br«tk
shower! <r<;!u. flu- two branches of the reef appcr.r to be coming together as >the stones ascend The fifth stope is now witiiin about 4ft of the rich show left ill the back of tbe preceding one. , At So. 4 level the No. 1 reef in the leading stope eastward is of very large size, but in the roof appears to be splitting into two portions. Good progress is being made with the drive towards the winze and the stone broken shows colors of gold pretty freely. Tbe contractors for sinking the winze from No. 3 level are now down over 30 feet. • «.' ' DEEP LEVEL CEOSS. The company's men started work at No 5 level yesterday, and are now stripping the bangingwafl portion of tbe No? 2 reef. Owing to the winze not having been sunk on the boundary all the way, th« face will yet have to be advanced 8 or 9 feet before it will be broken into. The winae pa the hangingwall branch of the cirofsreef is making good progress in an excellent class of country, and the quarts in hand, which is about 2 feet wide 'and carrying favourable minerals, shows colon; of gold each breaking down The block of stopes on the Imperial side of the junctioa ! is now rery nearly worked oat, but tht , stopes on the southern side' are tmriag out good crushing dirt, 10 head of stantfti being engaged on it at'the. Herald anU« Moat of the flow of water from these stopes has now, been directed into a watercourse at No 3 level, and only a very small stream finds its way to No. 4. ' SKYiEQUR. ' The shaft is now dowtfnetrly 180 feet from the uurfac^, an<T '-tut /ipop'-at" "-k well I hole 13 or 14 feet deep has been sunk, the opening sets of the chamber will be put in, and the chamber cut out. A hard boulder has caused a delay in sinking for the past day or two. This baa, however, been cut through in the southern lMnd of the shaft, so the manager thinks he will now very quickly, get below, it A fine white class of country is icomiog in at the bottom. The depth at which the level will be opened outwill give*block of 70 feet in height \ below the old City of Lueknow workings. The distance to crosscut for the leader is not more'than 70 feet at the nearest point, but the drive will be directed more in a south-east, direction, ' and should intersect the leader near where the shot of gold worked by the former i proprietors comes down. ! GOLD EETUENS. City of Manchesteb.—Staekdale and 1 party, tributers, have crushed about 29 loads of dirt for the yield of 18ozs 18dwti gold.
