Mr James Service's proposal for the annexation of the New Hebrides Islands has received the cordial approval of Lord Normanby, and his Excellency .telegra pbed to Lord Derby urging the' expediency of the project. The prisoner Sweeney (alias Longmore), who was arrested in Sydney on a charge of robbing the Colonial Bank at Brunswick in April last, was brought up at the Police Court to-day and committed for trial.

The Melbourne manager of the National Mortgage and Agency Company of New Zealand (Limited) reports of the local grain market as follows:—- Shipping wheat is quieter, but steady at 5s to 5s Id. For New Zealand oats prices are barely main timed, feeding sorts being quoted at 3s to 3s 3d ; milling ditto. 3s 3d to 3s 4d ; New Zealand oats (under bond), 2a 3d t" 2s 6d. The market is slightly in favor of buyers.
