RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT
THIS DAY.
(Before H. Eenrick, Esq., KM.) Catherine Martin ' was charged with stealing four shirts of the Value of 16s the property of Wm. Martin.
W. Martin, draper described how the shirts were outside his shop on Saturday night lastat sis o'clock. He missed them at eight o'clock, and reported the matter to the police. He recognised the shirts produced as similar to t&osie stolen, and the marks ou them were his private marks- He did not sell prisoner the shirts, and was certain that they had not been sold. The last witness' son (an assistant) gave corroborative evidence, and deposed to seeing prisoner pass the shop about seven o'clock that evening. , Constable Herbert deposed that he, in
company with Constable Slight, went to prisoner's house on Saturday night, and found the shirts produced between .the bedding, partly hidden the papers with marks on the floor. Constable Slight went to search for the prisoner, and after three-quarters of an hour returned with her. She denied that she had any stolen property in the house. They arrested her.
Constable Slight corroborated the testimony of the last witness.
The prisoner said she was drunk at the time, and knew nothing about the affair. The Bench held the charge proved, and senteuced prisoner to three months hard labor in, Mount Eden Gaol.
