DUNEDIN.
Yesterday.
Considerable comment is occasioned by the action of the four Licensing Commitmittees for the city in regard to the hours of licensing. In the central district some of the houses in the main thoroughfare were restricted to 11 o'clock, whilst in Leith district, houses at the complete out* skirts of the town were granted till 12 o'clock. Two members of the committee (Messrs Elliott and Street) write in the Star to night in regard to their action in a particular case, and add:—"ln our opinion the provision of the Licensing Act with regard to elective committees is a great mistake, and the sooner the old system of nominated benches is restored the better it will be for the public and the publicans."
This day. A lively meeting of the South Dunedin Council kept up till nearly three this morning. The presence of twelve policemen prevented any display of rowdyism. The gas dispute remains in statu quo.
