WELLINGTON.

Yesterday.

A new Commission of the Peace has been prepared, and now awaits the Governor's signature. A good many names of present Justices are omitted, and notice has been sent to prevent them acting after the Commission has been signed. Amongst them is Mr P. Moeller, of the Occidental Hotel. Government inform him that they have determined that it is undesirable any holder of a publican's license should be in the Commission of the Peace, but should he at any time cease to hold such a license they will be glad to re appoint him. This dry.

A six-roomed bouse at Newtown, owned by the Equitable Building Society, and occupied by a family named Fulton, was burnt down early this morning. It was insured—the building for £300 in the South British, and the furniture for £150 in the National. The fire originated in the back portion of the house where Mrs Fulton states there has been no fire used for the last three weeks. Shortly before the alajm was given she states she heard footsteps at the back of the house, and suspects incendiarism. Much excitement was caused at Carterton yesterday through the arrest of Eli Thomas and Joseph Strawbridge, farmers Waihakeke, on suspicion of being connected with recent robberies of drapery, and boots found, some of which were identified. They appear this afternoon.
