A country man was suffering from in« fiamnoation of the lunga; they recom- . mendedhim a dozen ieeehes. Instead of applying them to his chest, the peasant had them fried, as if they had been so many gudgeons, and eagerly swallowed them. The next day he thanked the doctor and declared that those little"'crea- . tures had done him a power of good," especially as he had been kept on low diet for the last three days. In the immense vaults recently constructed for the French Minister of Finance, is placed the safe. or. strong room, one of the largest cash lif9£fc we know of. Its length is 40 feeCfeJßht6| feet, and width 5 feet. It .'cQasains a number of iron drawers and capooards, in which the valuables are deposited. During the festivities attending the reimra of the troops on the 21st and 22nd of September, 1866, the hotels in Berlin were so overcrowded that the visitors had to be.accommodated in all sorts of queer places. One married couple had to take up their quarters for the nigbtin a bath* room, the wife having a bed made for her on the floor, while the husband slept on a mattress laid across the bath. In. the night the gentleman had occasion tdwajjl the servant and felt about for the bellrope, but what was his dismay when he suddenly found himself deluged by a stream of cold water, and the harder he rang the faster it came down. At the noise and shouts of the couple, the servants ran in with a light, when it becameapparent that the gentleman had by mistake pulled the rope communicating with the shower bath.
A gentleman was returning home late , at night in a cab, when it flashed across^ his mind that he had no money to pay his' fare. On the way he thought out the following little scheme to get out of the dil» emma. On alighting he told the cabman in a tone of the deepest distress that he had lost two pieces of gold in the cab, that he could not find them in the dark, and therefore asked him to wait till he had gone in for a light to look for the lost money. G. at once opened the frontdoor with his latchkey, but he had not been in the house long before he heard the cab drive off. Kunning back to' the door, he called after the cabman, who only drove all the faster, and the young man smiled when he thought of the success of his plan and of cabby's long .• face when he failed to discover the lost gold. %

Could a woman in a sealskin confess that she could not read ! Taking the pencil she made a few dashes, and' her order read: "Dinner, 50 cents," "Feb. 20, '83," "vegetables," "please pay at the desk," " celery " .
