The regular meeting was held last evening. Present—His Worship the Mayor, and Ors Carpenter, Menuio, McCullough,McGowan,Osborue, Speight and Veale.—The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed.—Authority was given to issue summonses for unpaid rates.—Mr Kitehing's offer to erect ;a lamp at the corner of Pollen and Willoughby streets-rprovided the Council would pay for gas—with a view to preventing larrikins assembling there, waß reocived, and it was resolved that the writer be informed that his request could not be granted until lighting was generally conn •idered.—The Winding Association was granted^ perjniwott to »»k« • tranjwty
aer,oss Pollen street, as per plan sent, subject to the approval of the Works Committee.—Mr MeDermott's application for a few weeks' time to complete the Waiotahi aqueduct was referred to the Works Committee. A letter was read from Mr T. Spencer drawing the attention of the Council to the report of the Petitions Committee of parliament re his claim for compensation for damage done by the Borough appropriating the water from the Waikiekie creek. He claimed the water without reservation, but would accept an inch pipe's supply, or £600 as compensation. After some discussion—during which it was said the Borough should do all it could to assist Mr Spencer in obtaining relief from the Government, but he had no claim against the Borough—it was agreed that the letter should be received. Mr Beere's application for a balance of account was referred to the Finance Committee. Goldfield's revenue and duty vouchers to the amount of £571 18s 9d we received from Government. The Works Committee reported that they could make no recommendation re Mr Ehrenfried's solicitor's claim for damages caused to his property by the Waiotabi aqueduct. Messrs Price and Watson requested that the Council continue the Beach road recently constructed from the Karaka Creek to Cochrane street, to Mary street, which the Foreman of Works estimated would cost—for abroad and footpath—£lso. The Committee had the site marked off, so that the applicants could fill their sections up to the road I line, but owing to being short of funds, the Council could not have the work done at present. Instructions have been given to repair the footpaths in Kirkwood street from Cochrane street to the Waio-Kartrka School. The cost of renewing culverts which had fallen in on the Karaka Road, and at Noke Noke Creek would be £80; this would have to be paid jointly with the County Council, who had been notified to that effect.—lnstructions had been issued causing. the road between Rocky Point and the slaughterhouse at Tararu to be repaired.—The Foreman of Works had been directed to reduce his pay-sheets and expenses.—The report of the Inspector of Nuisances was received.—The Believing Officer wrote, stating that 81 families had been relieved during the month at a cost of £28 Os Bd.— The supply contract terminated on the 30th inst.; be recommended that tenders be also called for medical attendance and mcdi cine for sick destitute persons.—lt was resolved to strike the following rates :— General, Is; library, Id; water, 5 per cent.—Accounts, amounting to £431 18s, were passed for payment.— In reply to the letter received from Messrs Whitaker and Russell, claiming £300 for Mr Ehrenfried on account of damage done to his property by the Waiotahi [aqueduct; it was resolved that the Council agree to refer the matter to arbitration. —The repairs to the footpath be» tween the Big Pump and Burke street were left to the Works Committee, as was also the footpath in Cochrane street leading to the Waio Karaka School.—lt was agreed that a joint meeting of the Council, County, and Harbor Board be held, with a view to arranging an amalgamation of the Harbor Board with the Borough Council.
