This day. A fire occurred at Mount Eden »t five o'clock this morning and destroyed three two storey houses and dwelling houses and contents. It originated on the premises of Mr Thomas, chemist; Gardner's, butcher, and Layer's, grocer, bi ing the other places destroyed. Tho cottage occupied by Kir km an was insured. Surman, who owned Thomas' and Gard ! ner's shops, is insured for £400 in the New Zealand ; Thomas's stock, furniture, and fixtures, is insured for £250, and Kirkman's furniture for £75 in the same office. Layer's building, 'stock, and furniture is insured in the South British for £500. ArriTed: Loch Kerr, barque, Wilson commander, from London ; sailed Feb Bth. Ransom, barquentine, from New York ; sailed Jany 10. Adams, who escaped from the lockup on Thursday, was captured at Fapakura yesterday. It appears that after escaping he stole a horse from a Kemuera settler. Among his effects a pistol was discovered. The prisoner is 22 years of age. Priestly, who was tried for the murder of Hugh' Hamilton, writes to the Herald denying the statement made in the Northern Wairoa Gazette, that he stated he believed Mrs Hamilton knew all aboat Hamilton's death.
