Meeting of Parliament.

Firo in Shortland.

It has been decided that Parliament will be called together for tha despatch of business on Jane 14th.

The ecltpre was clearly visible at Castlepoint and Whangarei. .. ,

Shortly before three o'clock p.m. on the 10th the boarding house fronting Grey street, in the occupation of MrC. Butter-! worth", and connected with the Warwick Arms Hotel, was observed to be on fire. Tlie flames were first noticed on the roof by a native on the beach, and he at once gave the alarm. A large crowd soon gathered, and the Shortland Fire Brigade was quickly on the scene with their hose reel. A jet of water was at ouce played on the fire, and in less than half an hour from the first alarm the flames were subdued. Only the upper story of the building ,is burnt, but the lower rooms are damaged by the water. The only person in the building when the fire started was a servant girl, who was laying down the carpets. Mr West's chair factory is close alongside, and it is surmised that a spark from the chimney must have fallen on the roof and ignited' the shingles. The building is owned by Brown, Campbell, and Co., and is insured, but the stock is not, and Mr Butterwbrth is thus a heavy loser. Some of the furniture and bedding was saved, A little damage was done to Mr West's stock by the water. The Grahamstown Fire Brigade were on the scene in excellent time, but fortunately their services were not re* quired.
