A Narrow Escape.
Four men working for the Mariner Company had a narrow escape on the 24th ult. They were being lowered in the cage to J>fo. 4 level, but when they were down some distance the engineer lost con» trol of his engine, the rope ran out rapidly, every effort to stop it being 'unavailing, and the men went down into 23ft of water; At first it was feared that ODe was drowned, but this happily proved .untrue. Some men were working at £io. 4 level, and with their assistance the men climbed out of the water and to the surface. One of them, named William Coad, was bruised a little on the head, but the others were, fortunately, not injured. The men are: Coad, Dunstan, Cain, and Trehilcock. Only one cage was in use at the time, and the cause of the accident was a defective break in the fly wheel. This has now been repaired, and other alterations made; and the engine works much better. ;
