Diamonds.

A Mrs Gordon of Christchurch writes to the Herald re the diamond discoveries in the Auckland province. About 1847 or 1848 she says a great many diamonds were found by a party of men and were given to the late Dr Sinclair, the Colonial Secretary at that time. Dr Sinclair was staying at her husband's place, and held investigation in some scientific manner, the nature of which she is not acquainted with. She says "the stones were sent home and proved to be diamonds, but of very small size, so that they thought it would not pay at that time. I suppose the locality is at the Miranda side of the Thames at a place called Hau-trahi Creek, about one and a half miles from Whakatiwai Creek on the north side, and about three miles, as well as I can remember, on the south side from Smith's farm, and about a quarter of mile from high water mark, by the foot of the first little hill. Since the letter appeared a settler has proceeded to the spot indicated for prospecting purposes.
