NEW PRINCE IMPERIAL.
In taking down the reef in the second stope west of the winze, above No. 5 level, last night, SOlbs. of picked stone and specimens were secured, a little gold being left showing. At No. 4 level, the managerissquaring up the driveontheNo. 2to face of the small drive he put in on the hangingwall leader. This, is being done so that separate drives can be started on the two branches. Gold was seen, and a few stones bagged while, breaking the quartz. The hangingwall leader is bearing round to the left, or towards where the Mariner's reef should be found, and when the face is squared up driving will be continued on this branch, so as to reach its junction with the larger reef as soon as possible. The company have purchased the spiders erected at a shaft on the Moanatairi ground, and the clntch gear will be affixed to the machinerynow in use. n This will be a great advantage, as the cages can be changed to the different levels with very little trouble.
QUEEN OF BEAUTY.
A nice dab of gold was seen yesterday in a stone broken from the roof just above the reef of No. 10 level. The drive at No. 8 having hole through to the Piako shaft, good ventilation is secured, and the crosscut south to intersect the Bird-in-Hand and Vanguard reefs at No. 8 level will shortly be resumed. The distance yet to drive to reach the first lode is about 220 feet, and the Vanguard reef is some distance further ahead. In both reefs the manager is confident payable dirt will be found. It is also intended to drive, at either No. 9 or 10 level, to get under the tributers' workings on the Queen of the May foot wall lead. Connolly and party have ju3t finished a crushing of 29 loads of general dirt and SOlbs of picked stone, the result of a little over five weeks' work, for the rich yield of 190ozs 3dwts melted gold. This quartz was taken from the leader just above No. 8 level, so it is reasonable to suppose that good dirt will be found below that level. A considerable distance will have to be driven, but at No. 9 level a drive hxs already been put in 100 ft on the Queen of the May reef east of its junction with the main lode.
TAPU.
A little mining is still going on in this district, two claims being manned. Both are on payable quartz, but a great difficulty is experienced in sinking to any depth, owing to the large quantity of water met with. Reilly and party, Jam Tart claim, have just finished a crushing of 2 tons, at Pepper and Coombes' battery, for the good yield of 6ozs 4d wts gold. The leader where this parcel of dirt was obtained is from a foot to 18 inches wide, and is somewhat split up, but it makes more solid going down. Sheridan and party, who are working on the same reef, are now crushing, and expect a payable return.
WELCOME (TE AROHA.)
The proprietors of this • claim, Beech and party, have treated a ton of dirt athe Alburnia battery for the splendid re turn of 76ozs. odwts. melted gold. The claim is situated at Waiorongomai, between the Vermont and Moa holdings The parcel treated was broken from the outcrop of a large flat reef 10 or 12 feet wide, which is composed of a number of quartz stringers with mullock between. It was from two of, these stringers, on the hangingwall of the reef, that the crush^ ing was taken, The stone is reddishbrown in colour, and it would be very hard to see gold iv it. A yield of not more than 20ozs. was expected. The proprietors had before taking out this crushing put in a low level from the road and intersected the reef, but did not drive through it, only the footwall portion being cut into. This return is encouraging, and should stimulate the proprietors of adjoining holdings to push on operations.
GOLD EETURNS.
City op Manchester. —Stockdale and party, tributers, have crushed 12 loads at Bull's mill for the return of 13ozs sdwts melted gold.
