tion.
Daniel Carey, the second of the Phoenix Park assassins was executed to-day; there was an immense crowd of people outside the gaol and much sympathy was expressed.
St Petersbuhg, May 18
Several officers of the Imperial Guard have been arrested, charged with being members of a secret revolutionary club.
London, May 18
The Aboriginal Protection Society has written a letter to Earl Derby, the Secretary of State for the Colonies, regarding the projected annexation of New Guinea. The Society urges that the Island should be annexed by Great Britain as a Crown colony instead of being placed under the jurisdiction of the Queensland Government, animadverting upon the outrages which are alleged to have been committed by the Queensland police upon natives of that colony.
H.H.H. the Duke of Edinburgh and Lord Wolseley left London for Moscow to attend the coronation of the Czar on Sunday the 27th inst.
London, May 17.
The total reserve in the Sank of Eng» land in notes and bullion has decreased by £500,000 during the week, and now stands at £6,800,000. The proportion of reserve to liabilities has further fallen to 32 per cent.
At to-day's wool auction 10,300 bales were offered. A fair demand was again experienced.

London May 16. The new constitution confers universal suffrage on the Egyptian population over 20 years of age. The Land Leaguers are dismayed at the Pope's circular. Mr Sexton, M.P., contends it does not apply to the laity. A Highland regiment is how in garrison at Port Said.
The Agent-General for Queensland, M> Archer, in a letter to the Times, denies that the colony has any desire to enslave the Papuan inhabitants of .New Guinea, under any form of labour traffic.
An infernal machine has been discovered at Ballina, and 24 men have been arrested in connection with the discovery. The Sultan promises reforms in Armenia. -
The Victorian Government have pur" chased " A Highland Landscape," by Mr H. W.B. Davis, X.A.. Two other pictures that were exhibited in the Royal Academy have been purchased for the National Art Gallery. Sir Anthony Musgrave, who recently accepted the Governorship of Queens land, has lef Jamaica.
