A QUEER STORY.

A correspondent of the Globe, describing the Great Dismal Swamp of the Southern States says:—All the water in that part of the world, is, it seems, of a dark color, resembling French brandy or strong coffee. It ia, nevertheless, wholesome and pleasant, and is freely drunk by those who live or work in or about the swamp. A stranger to the district was one day dining at an hotel, and seeing before him a little bottle containing a liquid which he took to be brandy, helped him* self and mixed from another bottle which seemed to contain water, The mixture was rather strong, and he added more water, and so kept on watering and drinking until he began to get drunk and throughly perplexed. "Landlord," he stammered. " come here. This is darned queer brandy of yours. The more water I put in the stronger it gets." He had been diluting swamp water with white; whisky; - :■ .
