DEEP LEVEL CROSS.
The Big Pump has been stopped since Monday, while the boilers were being inspected, and some slight repairs effected to the machinery. The manager expeots, however, that he will be ready to start again on Friday morning. The water has risen considerably in the shaft, but a week's pumping should take.it out again so that work can he resumed in the south crosscut. Work at the Imperial end of the ground is proceeding as usual. The stopes are turning out a good supply of crushing dirt, gold being seen freely, though no picked stone has come to hand during the past week. At No. 3 level the drive to intersect the cross-course which, is gifine out the water in the stopes has been started, and a week's work will probably finish it, the distance to drive being about 30 feet. The country is tight at present, but it will become softer as the face is advanced. The winze' on the No. 2 reef at the Imperial boundary is down 46 feet, but the reef is still small and muh locky, being disturbed by the break met with in the drive at No. 4-. level. The country is good for gold, and as soon as the break is left behind the reef will no doubt be found to improve. The winze on the crossreef is down 25ft. The footwall portion of the reef, which is being sunk upon, is from 2£ to 3ft. wide, and though no gold was seen last breaking down, the mineral indications continue good.
THAMES GOLDEN CROWN
Tenders were opened at 2 o'clock this afternoon, for driving 130 feet, and that of E. Whitford and party, at 18s per foot, was accepted. Work will be started to-morrow morning, and will be con* tinued with three shifts. The drive will be on the No, 1 battery level reef seaward of the crosscut at the 170 feet level, and is being put in for the purpose of proving whether or not payable ground exists where the slide crosses the reef. Some good dirt was obtained at this point above the 100 feet and battery levels, so it is not improbable it will con tinue downwards. Besides the intermediate crosscut between the 100 and 170 feet levels, a crosscut is being put in at the brace level to cut Herival's leader, which should be to hand in about a fortnight. When crushing is commenced the Prince Imperial company will employ 10 head of stamps, and the company's workmen have during the past few days been making a platform, so that the drays can tip the quartz into the battery.
NEW MANUKAU.
A new leader about 6 inches wide was cut on Monday in the crosscut for the winze from the Waiotahi bottom level. No gold has been seen in it, but the quartz looks well, carrying a good percentage of mineral, and also a quantity of rosiny substance, similar to what is met with in the Imperial reef.
GOLD RETURNS.
City of MANCHESTEE.—Scotfc and party, proprietors, have banked 9ozs lOdwts gold.
