GISBORNE.
This day.
News was received here yesterday of the death of an old Gisborne settler, Mr Duncan Mackay, whilst on a visit to Wellington. He owns a large quantity of land here. '
There is an extraordinary vacancy in the Borough Council, and Richard Hill Fisher, manager of the Loan and Mercantile Agency, is mentioned as a probable candidate.
The Ormond Road Board is in a curious fix. After the election of the Board, the Re turning Officer sealed up the ballot papers, to be deposited for the year with the Clerk of the R.M. Court for safe custody, and by mistake also included the rate rolls. The clerk cannot break the seal under a penalty of fifty pounds, and under the circumstances the Highway Board can neither collect nor levy rates. The fact has caused much commotion.
