A coroner s inquiry, held at the instance of the police, took place at Waihenga yesterday, to enquire into the circumstances connected with the destruc tion of the Waihenga Hotel two months ago. The jury found there was no evidence to show how the fire originated; they considered that the chimney was defective in construction; and further, they believed it was foul through uot having been swept

The election for a member of the Harbour Board to "replace Mr W. V. Jackson, the late Chairman, took place to»day, and resulted in Mr J. Dutbie being elected by a majority of nearly 200. MrDuthie, in returning thanks, expressed his opinion that the construction of a dock in the harbour was quite within the means of the Harbour Board, and that he hoped before long to be able to place before the Board a scheme for the purpose. Mr W. 0. Buchanan addressed his constituents at Carterton last night, and re^ ceived the usual complimentary vote.
