The object of this Company is to provide tonnage suitable to the growing trade of the Port of Auckland, so that the imports and exports of our city may be as much as possible carried in LOCALLY OWNED VESSELS, and the shipping business carried en by a PUBBIX LOCAL COMPANY.
Tho rates of freights current in this colony compare most favorably with thoee ruling in neighboring colonies, and are as a rule sufficiently remnnerativft to leave a good proit, trading hence eit er foreign or intercolonial.
The acknowledged daily increasing commermercial im "ortarce of Auckland is a source of gratificat or), and the shipping trade, under skilful management, and with sufficient capital, would meet with speedy and great development with many pirts of the World with which we arc,at pre ent not in absolutely direct communicatioir.
The object of this Company is to provide v-seels to trade :in t.lic directions already opened, and others which may from time to time offer inducements.
There is ample room for a well-organised new line between Auckland and London, Liverpool and Glasgow, with New York, and with fome of the larger centres of Continental Enropean trades.' Of course, the large and increasing export of balk and sawn timber will form an important: adjunct. A trade with Tasmania, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, 4c, being alrea'y established could easily bo continued with regularity, whiUt the Newcastle and Grdjmouth coal trades should be also provided for. There is a vast field in prospective for a good trade with Xh erica, Mauritius, China, Manilla, Calcutta, The Caps, Noumea, and numerous foreign por s, wi'b some of which. even at the present moment, a profitable direct trade is being carried o:i in a desultory manner, and which would find support from the new industries lately established here and in prospective establishments.
The Company do not propose to limit themselves to running their own vessels, but will from time to'time charter vessels when required, in the event of their own not being immediately available.
Messrs Stone Bros., who have for some time carried on a good shipping business, and who have now fairly started h new London line, possess the nucleus of a fleet suitable for com* mencing operations, and arrangements have been made to take over (heir vessels and the goodwill of their shipping business for the sum of thirty thousand six hundred and fifty pounds (£30,650), they taking half the. amount in Company's shares. Their fleet, consisting of 8 vessels, with aggregate tonnage of 2642 tons, should be augmented as soon as possible, so that the business may be extended without delay, especially the London and American branches.
The eervic s of Mr 0.8. Stone, as managing director, and the staff at present under his control, who are experienced in this line of business, have been secured to take office under the new Company. ;
It is further proposed that the working expeases should be conducted on strictly economical principles, the expense of agencies aud branches to be defrayed out of commissions on the actual freights earned by those branches. *
The proposed capital is set down at £150, 000, but as only a small portion it required at present for the purchase of the nutting fleet and contingent expenses, further capital will not be called up unt 1 Teasels suitable for the London and other trades may offer for tale at easonaMe price*, until which time it is pro* pos d to charter vessels as required to supplement the present fleet. It is proposed to invite all Auckland busi* - ! seas-men and all who may hare any interest in the trade of our port to take Shares in. thit local Company, aad to give the undertaking 1 every possible'support. The Company would thus be in a measure self-supporting, and strong enough to compete most successfully^ with any outs de or foreign company or foreign shipping. The Company could then not fail to be a credit to our port, and a moit lucrative investment to Share-holders. The promoters having every confidence in the success of the undertaking, now appeal to the public to ensure it by subscribing freely for Sh»r s.
