DUNEDIN.

Yesterday.

Mr R. Stout suggests, in the evening paper to-night, that the: Mayor .should call a meeting to devise means of giving assistauce to any of the Wild Deer's immigrants who require it when they land. The Committee of the Chamber of Com* merce have adopted a resolution with re* gard to the proposed Harbour Board Bill, to the effect that in their opinion the Board should not be elective, but consist of members appointed by the Government, and should consist mainly, if not wholly, of skilled men whose sole business it should be to manage the business of the Board, and who should receive adequate remuneration for their serfices,—'VXhat, whether v selected or au appointed body, no person who has a personal interest in shipping or in the loading or unloading of

vessels, who have a contract under the Board should hold a seat on the Board."

At the inquest on Thos. Meek, killed at the railway station last night, the jury found a verdict of "Accidental death." It was shown that the accident occurred through his making a miscalculation of the balance between the engine and the coaling shed.

The Monarch inquiry was begun to day. The captain states that the surveyor's estimate of the-cost of repairs to the vessel was from £1500 to £2000. Only a few bales of the cargo were damaged. The pilot Kelly said that had he known there was so much sea on the bar he would not have taken the vessel out. She was not drawing 20 feet, snd he considered there were 22 feet on the bar. The inquiry was adjourned.
