AUCKLAND.
This day. The Hon. F. Whitaker went South yesterday.
The Governor sent for Mr McDonald, the Harbor Engineer, and also for plans of the harbor. Mr McDonald spent about an hour with His Excellency, giving him all explanations in bis power. The result of the interview has not transpired.
In the afternoon the Governor visited the Onehunga ironworks.
Another race has been arranged between the yachts Arawa and Eita.
Messrs W cKay and Shakespeare, farmers and racehorse owners, of Takapuua, have become inpolvent. The liabilities are over £4000.
Regarding the solar eclipse on Monday next, Mr Stevenson, writes :—The line of totality passes on the present occasion about 500 miles tp the north of Auckland, this being the largest eclipse witnessed in the northern portion of New Zealand for many years past. At Auckland about three-fourths of the solar surface will be covered. The phases given below are computed for Auckland; the magnitude will be considerably greater for districts considerably to the north of the city. The beginning of the eclipse will be 6hra 58mins 38secs a.m.; middle of the eclipse, Bhrs Smins 33secs a.m.; the end of the eclipse will take place at Bhrs 7mins 22secs a.m.
