Yesterday;
Thomas Meek, engine driver, was oiling his engine at the main station this evening. He was on the ground, and asked the fireman to move the engine a little. The fireman seems to have misunderstood the request, for he moved the engine towards Meek, and it crushed him against the coal shed. Me was dreadfully injured, and on being taken to the hospital, died within an hour or two. He leaves a wife and three children. , .. .
In the R.M. Court, this morning, Mr Giddes, of Clinton refreshment rooms, sued James Crisp, member of one of the Port Chalmers volunteer corps, for. £5 damage for trespass and injury to his. refreshment stall. The plaintiff alleged that the defendant was going to the Invercargill Easter Review by the first train on March 22ad, and, with other volunteers, helped, himself to refreshments without paying for the same. The lease? was brought for exemplary purposes, and as nominal damages were only asked for, his Worship found for the plaintiff for 5s and costs (29).
A friend of the Presbyterian Church, who does not wish bis name known, has giren £300 of the £500 required towards the purchase of a church site at the north east valley suburb of the city.
