A Bank Clerk's Fay.
At the Magisterial examination of Francis James Hodgson, in Nelson, charged with the embezzlement of £500 from the National Bank of New Zealand, the following particulars were elicited from the manager by Mr Pitt, counsel for the defence. No comment upon this is needed:—How long was Hodgson in the Bank? About four years, ,W,hat was his salary before he was removed to Christchurch ? £80. How long had he been teller? About 12 months. As teller would he have to bear the loss of any mistakes ? Certainly. It is not . uncommon for tellers to make mistakes? No. Had he also to subscribe to a guarantee fund ? r Yes. What is that fund ? It is established to ensure the Bank against peculations. Do you know for how much Hodgson was insured? I am not sure; I think £1000. What would his contribution be P £8 per annum, reducing every year. j That was deducted rom his salary? Yes. ,- If an officer is convicted of embezzling monies of the Bank, thi?'fund makes up the loss ? Certainly. Over what period had the irregularities' in the books extended ? Six or seven months. What— would be the average cash balance he would have in his hands as teller? Between £2000 and £2500.
