We have been requested to draw the atten. tion of the County Council to a bridge on the Moanatairi Creek road, a short distance above the Caledonian mullock tip.. It is in a very unsafe state for traffic, and two horses have already slipped into (he holes in it while crossing. It iB to be hoped the Council or its Engineer will see to the matter at once, and prevent any farther accidents.
The valuation of properties in Oamaru district, Otago, has this year been increased by over £50,000.
At a meeting of the congregation of the Epiphany Church, Auckland, held last Wednesday, it was resolved to introduce the Hymnal known as " Hymns Ancient and Modern,'' into use in the church. This Hymnal is now adopted by all the Anglican churches in the city and suburbs, and in many churches in the country districts. Copies can be obtained from the booksellers at prices varying from four pence to one guinea. It will be remembered that an attempt was made at the last meeting of St. George's parishioners to introduce, for use in the church, this popular hymn-book, but the majority at the meeting—who were perhaps composed of those in advance of, or behind the age, or who knew very little about the subject of contention—resolved that the book could not be used in the church. •
The season for shooting native and imported game opens to-morrow. A number of local " sports" have taken out licenses. Several enthusiastic ones chartered a steamer and proceeded this afternoon to Coromandel to try their luck among the pheasants.
The connection between the water main on the Tararu road, and the pipes just laid to supply the Moanatairi wheel was to have been effected yesterday, but though Price Bros.' men were working at it all day they could not finish, and the batteries had consequently to be stopped to-day. The men are expected to finish late this afternoon.
The official agent who will act for New Zealand at the forthcoming Calcutta Exhibition is desirous of immediately obtaining entries from this colony. The gentleman appointed is Mr Oppenheimer, of Auckland, who will receive, applications for space. The Premier was interviewed by Mr Oppenheimer this week, and promised that a sum of money should be placed upon the estimates towards the expenses of the under* taking. The Chairman of the Thames Valley Bailway Company had an interview with the Premier on Thursday last. Messrs Gill and Wilkinson were present for the purpose of giving information as to the land available for the purposes of the Company in the Piako swamp; but, after going through the plans of the several blocks, it was ascertained that the quantity obtainable was considerably balowfhe number of aores required by the Company. Mr Whitaker promised that any land over that already allotted should; be given to the Company. There are several small patches of land along the line of route which might be obtained.
About six hundred people availed themselves of the opportunity to " see a whale" yesterday. The " tfVaitoa took out about 250 passenger*." A number of persons went " down to the sea in boats," and the Eopu road (we would sooner hare rowed) was well patronised by tho c desirous of observing the recently-captured cetacean.

Thb Secretary of the Wanganui Club was fined £1 and costs on Friday last, for a breach of the Bear Duty Act, by having beer drawn from a cask without defacing the stamp. The defendant* explained that it was done by mistake.
At a special meeting of the Auckland Harbor Beard on Saturday it was agreed to take over the contract for filling in the railway reclamation from the contractor, and use the stuff from Fort Britomarf, the scene of the recent, landslip. ;
The young man Elmore, whose foot was crushed so severely at Cadroon'e Mill, Coromandel, as to render amputation necessary, is progressing well under Dr Mullen's treatment.
A WOMAN in Dunedin, charged with using obscene language, pleaded that she had been to the Salvation Army meeting as she wanted to be a daughter of the regiment. The statement excited a good deal of laughter.
The estimated expenditure of the London School Board for the current year is £801,210 8s lOd, and a rate of about 7d in the £ on the rateable value of the metropolis is required to raise that amount. The number of children receiving tuition will be about 270.0C0. Th debt of the School Board is now £4,815,562.
Thb management of the Gaiety Theatre (London) announce that tbe gross receipts of tbe theatre during a six weeks' run was £3,800. Only a burlesque was being performed.
