WELLINGTON.
. This day. The Minister of Lands leaves for the South by the Penguin this evening.
The Agent-General, in his despatches under date March 1, states that he has now suspended forwarding emigrants to the Colony until June, and has withdrawn the advertisement inviting applications. He mentions that the ship Oxford, bound for Wellington, whicU was dismasted in the Bay of Biscay, was to embark the emigrants on the 30th March. Dr Hasard, who is in charge of the emigrants, reports, on tne 9th of March, that typhoid fever had broken out, but there were only a few cases. A yoang woman' named Sarah Stewart, who was one of the first to be attacked with the disease had died, and another young woman was dangerously ill. The other cases were progressing farourably, and the doctor be lieved there would be no further spread of the disease. He attributed the outbreak to the emigrants during the last few days they were on -the Oxford using water from the reserve tank, The AgentGeneral instructed the Company to have the tanks pumped out, and take all pro*
cautions to prevent a recurrence of the disease. The inquires respecting the colony he says are on the increose.
Government have received a cable confirming what appeared this morning re the San Francisco mail service, and that- the motion was passed subject to the Imperial Government agreeing to defray the cost of the convfyance of mails from New York to. Frisco on the same terms as heretofore. The Auckland agent of the Pacific Mails Company has wired to £ the head office, asking if they will' agree 4o the terms and a reply is expected by Monday.
The Agent-General cables under date London, April 26th, the departure of ship, Oxford, for Wellington, with 325 immi grants..
