OUR MINES.
NEW PRINCE IMPERIAL. A portion of the reef in the western drive at No. 5 level waa broken down today, and a few pounds of picked stone bagged, a fair show of gold being left in the face. The reef keeps about the same size. The leading stopeover the eastern drive having been carried along far enough, work has been resumed in the face. • • THAMES GOLDEN GROWN. The cam shaft of the battery broke a day or two ago, and while it was being repaired by Price Bros.' employees, only the berdans could be used. A start was made again on Thursday night. The general dirt is shaping for a similar yield to that obtained last month. i CALEDONIAN. Gold is still seen freely in the Red Queen cross-leader in the eastern drive, and occasionally a few pounds of picked stone come to hand. The general dirt is shaping for a payable yield, and the manager will; if possible, keep the five head going till the end of the month. JDAET. The portion of No. 1 reef which was stripped in the drive started eastward from the crosscut at No. 3 level, about 6ft iv length, was broken down yesterday, when it was found that another body of quartz was lying at the back- of the reef where first intersected. ■ The driving of the crosscut was, therefore resumed, and the footwall portion of the reef was
touched last night in the bottom of the drive, but none of it can be taken down till the top of the drive is carried forward. The new body of quartz is giving out more water than the hangingwall portion did, and the manager thinks that the water in the winze will now drain away. The mullock between the two portions of jj the reef is about three feet wide, and is f| full of small quartz stringers. Good | progress is being made with the patting 1 in pasition of the pump lifts. The surface ] works are also proceeding satisfactorily... A largo hole is being made in the bill for the boiler, just behind the engine-house, and a smithy has also been erected.
MAGNOLIA. Since the present manager, Mr Sabe, took charge, about three months ago, a large amount of work has been done. A drive has been put in on the course of the Gibraltar reef for a distance of over 200 ft, which makes the total length of the tunnel about 500 ft. The reef hai not been taken down for the whole distance driven, but where showing contains good minerals, though no gold has yet been seen in it. In the face of the drive it is about' ij* a foot wide, bat the manager thinks there is another portion in the hangingwall, and will crosscut in that direction shortly.. A crossut has been put in 24ft on the footwall side, and has cut a number of small leaders. In two of these colors tod dabs of gold were seen in passing through them, and a couple of nice stones were bagged from the largest one yesterday. V It is about 4 inches wide, and the qaartz ": is very vuggy, carrying only a small proportion of mineral. The manager. intends to start driving westward on this leader, as two flinties, passed through in the drive on the big reef, will junction with it in less than 20ft and gold will likely be found at the point of contact. The crosscut will also be pushed ahead, and before it has been extended much further Nos. 2 and 3 reefs should be to hand. The Magnolia company have purchased the Robin Hood ground, and as soon as he can conveniently do so, the manager will start two men to pat in h low level to cut a run of payable dirt worked by the former proprietors, but which was not followed down.
