AN ENGLISH PAPER ON JOURNALISTIC VULGARITY.
The Sydney EulleHo doubtless considers itself fortunate in having been noticed by i a first-class London paper; but it is not to be congratulated on the impression which it has conveyed of the amenities of colonial-politics. Says the Standard, referring to the " Bulletin Programme "in the recent election contests:—-It begins with the natural cry of " Australia for the Australians,'' and '}' not,'' it adds," for Gall. Soaked Bigots." So far one can heartily) go with the Bulletin, and it can hardly be . rash to join in the cr/ of "Down with: the Snufflebusters. No Erysipelatous, Coffin-humping Land Sharks!" > The; precise drift of the delicate sarcasm is, of; course, lost to the reader who has not the advantage of being up in Sydney politics; but it may be readily conceded that " Snufllebusters" and " Erysipoktous Coffin-bumping Land Sharks'' cannot be pleasant people to deal with. After this burst of eloquence, the compiler of the "Bulletin Programme "■becbraes oracu-; lar:--" The men who are rogues pritrately j are thieves publicly. ,•'•' The lebpard^jesh't change his spots. No tiian has two souls. Some politicians haven't one.soul.. Ah J," There is evidently, a sting in the 'tail of; this; but at whom the "Ah!" is pointed, dwellers in this effete old country cannot; guess. -One gets on more familiar ground when told to "Vote wheneveif you can." This is indeed, an Antipodean version of; the good old English formula, " Poll early and poll often ;" and there is reason in the demand that there shall be "No more shuttle-cocking the Government from one playtd out old man ,to another." One demand of the f-' Bulletin programme " is " a libel law like that of England," but a; perusal of certain parts of the address! gives the request a surprising aspect, and: will remind the reader of the injudicious; frogs who brought upon themselves the reign of King. Stork. The impression conveyed by the language of the Bulletinis that Australia is Amerioanising her institutions. !
