A fire broke out early this morning.in the grocery shop of Goorge Harrington, in the Arcade. The premises were completely destroyed. The stock is insured for £100 in the Hamburg, and the building in the Standard and Union.

At a meeting of the committee of the Chamber of Commerce, to-day the follows ing resolution was carried : •' In reference to the letters which have been written to various journals by Mr Thomas 0. Guthrie, respecting the freight he is prepared to accept from Glasgow to Otago, this commitee is of opinion that if he and those he proposes to represent will not take the current rates of freight, the merchants of this port will be content to take their chance of other Hues of vessels." The man Williams, who. was so severely injured by the accident on the deep stream section of the Otisgo Central Railway, died on Tuesday night. Robert Farmer was committed for trial today, for passing two counterfeit £5 notes; as also was the man Symmes for swindling a person by means of the matchbox trick. At the Harbor Board to-day a letter was received, signed by Messrs Green and Bracken, M.HR.'s, aod.about fifty other persons, asking that they should be received as a deputation to have a friendly conference as to work for improvement of the harbor. The Board declined to re« ceive the proposed deputation. The same body carried a resolution to day giving the City Cpuncir 12 month's notice to forbid them discharging sewerage in the harbor.r : ;\^;:; " "-■ -; '• ' ' :- '' ■ .
