Supposed Loss of a Schooner.
[Pbb Press Association.]
Wellingtom, This day. A quantity of wreckage has been picked up in a bay near Terawhiti. It comprises a lifebuoy, with "Hannah Barrett, Wellington," painted on it, part of a boat's fittings, two tars, and what appears to be the remains of a hatch. The schooner Hannah Barrett left here in ballast on. Monday last for Pieton to load timber, and as no word has arrived of her reaching her destination, it is feared that the little vessel has met with some disaster, as some »cry severe southerly weather was experienced shortly after her leaving this port. The Hannah Barrett is a topsail schooner of 57 tons and is owned and commanded by Capt. Fredk. Bemer. Her crew was A. Carlson, P. Fisk, and Andrew Schloper. Capt. Edie, of the Wanaka, reported on his arrival here from Lyttelton on last Wednesday, that on Tuesday night he passed a large floating object, which resembled either the back of a whale or a small vessel bottom upwards, bat it was too dark to say positively.
