Writing under data of the Bth of February, per Brindisi mail, received today, the Agent-General informs the Postmaster<Generrl that the Albion-Shaw, Saville Co., on the previous day had cha tared the fine steamer Westmeath, of 3190 tons and 1800 indicated horsepower, aud that the Agent Generel had arranged to send 200 people ia her (o Auckland direct.

It is understood that over 3000 persons have signed a petition for Longhurst's release. It will be presented to his Excellency on Friday next.

At the Education Board fo-day a resolution was passed urging the various School Committees in the district to enforce the compulsory clauses of the Education Act.

William Forman, iy merly captain of the schooner Julius Vogel, and latterly second mate of the Government steamer Stella, was this afternoon committed for trial on two charges: one of forgery, aud the other of embezzlement. The embezzlement is alleged to have taken place io his rendering accounts to Mr Compton, owner of the Julius Vogel, and the forgery by attaching another person's name to a receipt, to whom Forman slated he paid money, whereas he had not. •
