' From Bymes and Co., Pharmaceutical Chemists, Medical Hall, Simla, January 5, 1880 To J. T. Davenport, £f>q., S3, Great Russell Street, Bloomsbury, London.—"Dear Sir W embrace this opportunity of congratulating you upon the widespread reputation this'justly esteemed medicine, Db. Coixis Bbownb's Cblobodxme, has earned for itself, not oil/ in Hindostan, but all over the East. As a remedy of general utility, we much question whether a better is imported into the country, and we (hall be glad to bear of its finding a place in every Anglo-Indian home. The other brands, we are \iappy to say, are now relegated to the native bazaars, and, judging from their sale, wet ncy their sojourn .there will be:but evanescent. We could multiply instances ad infinilum of ihe extraordinary efficacy of Db. Conia Bbowbe's Chlobodykb in Diarrhoea ana Djt^ntery, Spaems, Cramps, JNeur»lgiaj the Vomiting of Pregnancy, and as a general sedative, that nave occurred under our personal observation during many years. In Choleraic Diarrhoea, and even in the more terrible forms of Cholera itself, we have witnessed its surprisingly controlling power. We have never used any other form of this medicine than Collis -Browne's, from a firm conviction that it is decidedly the best, and also from a sense of duty we owe to the profession and the public at we are of opinion .that the substitution of any other than Collis Browne's is a PXiilBlBATa BEEACH 07 7AIXH OH THB PABT 07 IHE CHEMIST TO PBBSCBIBBB AKD PATIBKT ilIX> We arc-, sir, faithfully yours, Sjmes and Co., Members of the Pharm, fci'ociety of Gtrea' Britain, His Excellency the Viceroy's Chemists." . On Rheumatism. In these colonies those excesses which we have indulged in, < " hot youth " tel .upon us with fearful interest. Our regrets are useless, our repining futile. The sole idea should be the chance we> possess of remedying the ills we already have, for combatting the effects likely to result. Hide it as he may, put on as good an exterior as he can, still is the victim conscious that he is a living lie, and that sooner or later his I vices will discover him to the world. Our Faith, our obligations to society at Urge, the welfare of our future offspring, and the duty, we owe to ourselves forbids procrastination, and points out to us, not to wait till the ravaged break out in our constitutions. Before negotiating with a merchant, before engaging with a confidential -clerk; before employing a barrister, a careful man makes enquiries as. their standing, their length of occupancy or residence; and, in the case of a legal adviser, both as tc his legal qualifications and as to his capabilities of transacting the individual business he consults him upon. Strange to say, however, in the selection of medical man, the sufferer frequently omits these necessary precautions and without regard to the fitness, qualification, experience and ability for the particular ailment requiring treatment, he consults the nearest xnant whose experience and practice, perhaps, lies in quite an opposite direction. Is it astonishing that bo many are driven mad, are ruined in health, and are bankrupt in spirits, hope and money ? Have I not for years pointed out to them that I, Dr L. L. Smith, am the only legally qualified medical man advertising in the Colonies f Have I not also prosecuted, at my own expense, these very quacks, and exposed the various nostrums they are selling,—such as Phoßphody" Essence of Life, &c—and had them analy *d and found them,to consist of "Burnt Su M and flavoring matter," and the certificates . have pboved to be all forgeries. It is for this reason that I step out of the ethics of the profession and advertise, to give those who require the services of my branch an opportunity of knowing they can consult a legally qualified man, and one, moreover, who has made this his especial study. Dr L. L. Smith is the only legally q Alified medical man advertising, and he has been in Melbourne 24 years, in full practice on NEBVOUS DISEASES LOSS OF POWER AND DEBILITY SYPHILITIC AFFECTIONS WANT OF CONDITION GOUT AND EHEUMATIBM.
