DUNEDIN.
This day. Ten cases, including Massey's are set down for trial at the criminal sessions.
At the Law Societies' meeting, Mr Stout moved that as Mr Justice Gillies has disclaimed any intention of attempting to fetter the freedom of the Bar in defending prisoners, this meeting is of opinion that it is unnecessary to express any opinion on the Judge's charge in the case of Regina v. Gudgeon. This was negatived, and Mr Hosking moved that, after considering the circumstances of the case, and Judge Gillies' lettertoMr Russell, this meeting is of opinion that there was nothing open to censure in the line ol defence adopted by the prisoners' counsel. This was negatived by nine to four, and the original motion was then carried, Messrs Stout and Hosking alone voting against it. A sad accident is reported from Cape Saunders, where a boy and a girl named Nelson. 3| and 2£ years respectively, were so severely burnt by the accident of igniting an out-house, that the girl died soon after the occurrence, and the boy is injured beyond recovery. In tlie Inter Artillery competition Dunedin scored 694 beating all the Batteries but Thames.
