Hawke's Bay Races.
(Pee Pbbps Association.) Napieb, Yesterday. The first day of the Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting was most successful. The attendance numbered about 3.0C0, the racing was good, and the fields fair. There were no boil overs, the favorites generally winning. In addition to the events already published, the following were concluded :— Napier Handicap, of 500jovs. 1| miles. —P. Martin's Mischief, 1; Captain JJussell's Leonora, 2; P. Butler's Luna, 3. Eight others started. This was the race of the day. All came well into the straight, Mischief taking the lead from Leonora, and eventually winning by about three quarters of-a-length. Libeller ran and came in last. Time; 3mins ISsecs. Nubsebt Plate, of lOOsovs, for 2 year olds, half a mile.—A. McLean's Epicure, 1; Mr Smith's Robina, 2; Douglas" Jacob, 3. Lord of the Island also siarted. This race was won after a struggle with Robins. Time, SSjsecs.' Railway Handicap, of 125sovs, f-mile. —G, Bates' Minerva, 1; P. Eutler's Luna, 2 ; J. H. Pollock's Hippodamia. 3. Three others started. Time, lmin 20secs. This day. The weather for the second day's races is again favorable, and the attendance is larger th?n on the previous day. The first event was The GfiAND Stand Handicap of 150 sots:—Luna, 1; Louie and Leonata ran a dead heat for second place. Libeller, Leonora, and The Laird were left out of the race, not being at the post at the time of starting, 12.30, although they wera on the course. There is great public dissatisfaction with the starter, who was literally hooted at the weighing in. The inside totalisator paid a dividend of six guinea s. Louie led off with a start and maintained the same for three parts of the distance with Luna last, Luna then forged ahead, quickly passing both Leonata and Louie, and coming in an easy winner. Mischief and Hippodamia were scratched. After the race Captain Russell, the President of the Club, addressed those present, he said he had to apologise for his horse Leonora, which the public bad been good enough to make a favourite, not starting, it must be confessed that a clumsy start had been effected, which left three horses out of the race, but he wished to exonerate the starter from all blame, as it was his duty to start the races punctually.. : (Cries of dissent, and numerous voices "Why did he not start punctually then P ") •The Provincial Pboduce Stakes, of lOOsovb, weight for age, distance 1 mile,
brought out a field of seven. A good start was effected, Carmen winning hard held by a dozen lengths from the second and third horses, who were close together. Carman 1, Ngaro filly 2, Pastime 3. Time, lrain 49£secs. The inside totalisator paid a dividend of £2 155. Incense, Kuni, Jncob, and Eredeiica also started. Lady Bab did not show up.
