AUCKLAND.
This day
It is rumored that Sir Hercules Robinson intends visiting England during the
spring. Sir Dillon Bell's health is unsatisfactory, and his physicians recommend a warmer climate.
Sir W. Fox has sent to the Secretary of State for the Colonies a letter re native matters for the purpose of clearing away any misconception re the importance of the recent Maori mission. The letter was read before the Colonial Institute, and in the course of a discussion afterwards Sir Charles Clifford stigmatised the Treaty of Waitangi as a " mockery, delusion, and a sham." The Duke of Manchester re* marked that the Maoris seemed thoroughly friendly now, but during his short visit to New Zealand he saw and heard suffi* cient to convince him that there was no Englishman in the Colony but what would regret their extinction. An Auckland and Hawkes' Bay Imnd Company with a capital of £100,000 is now being formed in London.
The Bishop of JSelsou returns to the Colony this month.
